Insights / Gold, efficiently

The two ways to love gold.

No Indian portfolio conversation escapes gold: nor should it. The question is never whether to love gold; it is which wrapper you hold it in.

The full story

Jewellery is consumption with a memory attached: worn, gifted, inherited. It should be bought for exactly those reasons, because as an investment it leaks value at every step: making charges on the way in, purity questions in the middle, negotiation and deductions on the way out, and a locker bill every year in between.

Investment gold through funds and ETFs strips the leaks out. Purity is assured at 99.5%+ and audited; storage and insurance are the fund’s problem; you can start from ₹100 and automate monthly purchases; and you exit at transparent market value on any trading day, no jeweller’s counter, no discount for urgency.

The same gold price drives both wrappers: the metal’s risk and shine are identical. What differs is friction, and over the years friction compounds just as surely as returns. Sentiment deserves jewellery; allocation deserves the efficient wrapper.
